I think the Renault handsfree keycard is good in principle, but I'd like to see a much smaller version, say about the size of a typical USB memory stick. It wouldn't need the buttons, and could still have an emergency key blade in the bottom. It'd be even better if it was waterproof - car keys of old didn't care if you dropped them in a puddle, but you risk an expensive bill if you do it with a modern key or keycard.

I'm not sure about the ideas of voice recognition or pairing car opening/starting to a phone. I think you should always have a 'key' of some sort, and posession of the key should be what's required to enter and start the car. Other systems would complicate getting your car serviced or even asking someone to get something for you out of the boot.

There are USB finger print scanners these days too...

Servicing (if done by the same mechanic) wouldn't be a problem in this scenario. Otherwise the car could have a temporary 'recognition' assigned - EG the mechanics blue tooth phone or voice etc.
