IR central locking range erratic

I've got a '99 scenic 1.6. Recently I've been getting some strange results with the central locking. Normally I can unlock the car from about 10 metres. However, now I have to stand next to the driver's door to get any response. It's not the battery in the plip, as I've tried it. Also, my second plip gives the same results.

This only appears to be a problem when I've been driving through rain, and will clear up after 3 or 4 days. Does anyone know where the receiver is, so I can check it for dodgy wiring connections.

On mine it's a translucent black plastic bulge above the rear view mirror.

I'm guessing yours is different, because I've never had a range of ten metres and it's always been highly directional: not a hope in hell of opening the car while standing forward of the windscreen.
