Using EOBD

Does anyone have any experience of connecting to their car with OBDII?
I'm particularly interested if you've used one of the cheaper interfaces to a laptop or pda e.g. Elmscan.
I don't see why I should pay the dealer just to read the codes!
A quick look at the pins in my Laguna II initiale OBDII connector tells me that it has both the ISO and CAN connections.
Am I right in thinking that reading codes or resetting the fault light is done via the ISO, while the CAN is used for the deeper jobs such as downloading new programs to the ECU ?

Currently in hidnmine's garage:
2007 Clio DCi Initiale, 2009 Audi A6, and a 2009 Triumph Sprint ST

I have used an elm chip with a lap top. It works quite good reading the standard codes on several cars I tried with several progs, itís just a little slow. I havenít reseted any thing and I am not sure if it can be done with the elm.
