Working under bonnet when Starter motor started smoking?

Hi,

I had to remove my inlet manifold to change a fuel injector. All the parts were removed so I plugged the battery back in to lock car. I went back under the bonnet and laid the manifold back on to shut the bonnet and I saw and smelt smoke and the start motor was red hot to touch.

What would have caused this as the keys werent even in the ignition?

Am I likely to have burnt out the starter?

Thanks for any help.
