Indicator light starts on its own

Hi All,

Am wondering if anyone has a cause / solution for the following problem:

Vehicle: Kangoo 2004

Left Indicator light suddenly illuminates when stalk is in neutral position. Began yesterday on a drive back from France. Imagine how popular I was on the road. Sometimes it would allow me to override by indicating left and returning the stalk to the neutral position. 2 miles later it would begin again. Sometimes for just several seconds, sometimes a minute. By the time I got back home it was on permanently. I have read that it could be due to a faulty relay. Hazards work fine btw.

Having just spent a load of money literally days ago on a replacement rear axle after an antiroll bar snapped whilst on holiday, I'm really hoping for a reasonably cheap fix. The battery was disconnected although I don't imagine this is relevant.

Not sure if I need a technician or a magician but all thoughts most welcome.

Many thanks

Malcolm

Stalks fail, That would be my first check.
Second, Power module under bonnet soggy.

Re: Indicator light starts on its own

Hey,

Many thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking that it could be a soggy module as it had been through five hours of freezing fog yesterday.

Agreed it could well be a stalk issue but what surprises me is that the stalk returns to neutral without an issue after turning a corner. What bugs me more is that having checked further since my original post today, the following sequence occurred.

Switch ignition on
Stalk in neutral position
left indicator starts as soon as ignition engaged
After 2 mins, dashboard indicator shows as it is now turning right.
Stalk is still in neutral position
although dashboard light indicates a right turn, external bulbs signalling left.
Then external bulbs flashed right for ten seconds.
Then back to left etc etc

Maybe more the relay?

Re: Indicator light starts on its own

Makes sense.
Battery off (after allowing 5 mins for car to Sleep).
Dig out power PCB (take pictures if connectors not colour coded).
PCB in house, clean with toothbrush & inspect for verdigris / sogginess. Overnight on radiator or airing cupboard.
Make note of numbers, in case of needing replacement.
Try tomorrow, report back.

Re: Indicator light starts on its own

Will do when I can shake of this flu !!!

I will let you know the outcome as soon as known otherwise these great forums of shared knowledge sometimes leave you no further on which is a shame. I spent an age trying to locate an answer on this great website and good to keep the ball rolling for others in the future.

Much obliged
