i can't really advise on replacement but sounds like your aerial/aerial connection is faulty.
We have the original "cabasse auditorium" and in dash 6 cd changer in our car and on the whole it is pretty good. Ideally would like a bit more bass but overall for a standard fit unit it is one of the better ones.

Living in Cornwall where radio reception can be patchy at the best of times especially in country lanes and high hedges I was sceptical about the aerial being in the rear side window. However, I have been proved wrong and reception is excellent, not once have we lost signal or had any hiss or noise.Even in "known" weak spots it still manages to hang on to the signal.

I think the favorite stereo 'update' for Lag 2's is anything made by Sony as you can buy an adaptor to enable you to still use the remote controls for most Sony head units, although I'm not sure the dash display will still work(I think it just displays 'SONY' and nothing else).
As for the radio reception,I agree with SportTourer that there is probably a fault with either your aerial, head unit or the connection between the two.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Most of the top of the range stereos will be compatible with your in dash/column the supply for the display is set in the top of the stereo output. A quick word with your supllier should give you all the info you need. Hope this helps. Oily.
