lost key

I have a 96 renault megane and I have lost the key. Dont have a spare. Is there anywhere cheap I can get a new one or does anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

I was quoted 200 for a new key. The car is not even worth that. I have heard that I can get a key cut for around 10 if I have the ignition code and then I could bypass the immobiliser. Does anyone know how I can get these codes? I dont have the service manual.

Hi there.

I had something similar happen to me - check your insurance documents, you may have key cover included or with only a small insurance excess.

As to the codes? I wouldn't know.

Hope that helps in some small way.

Who quoted you that. If it is the IR plip type then at Renault the key blade's are about 15, the IR plip/fob is about 80 and coding is about 50.

I know this as I am ordering a new plip this morning and this was what I was quoted at a Dealer in Manchester and one in Glasgow (Home and work).

I am not sure if they use your old key to cut the new one though for 15. If you have lost it then it might be new locks tbh.

Might be worth giving Renault a call and ask how you can get a replacement key.

Then again, if you say you lost it it might be worth getting the locks changed. And unless the car is in poor condition I would say it is worth more than 20

Thanks for your comments.

Would it not work out cheaper to just get a key cut from code and then bypass the immoboliser?

I'm not even sure the immoboliser works. The red light on the dash stays on all the time., so I may just need the key cut.

Is there anywhere on the car that I could find the key code or ignition code or whatever its called that would allow someone to cut a key for me?

For obvious security reasons manufacturers don't include such information on the vehicle. If they did it could be easily stolen.
I suspect Renault would be the only source but you could try a key specialist
