Sounds like someone has done a hathchet job on the waring LED either to get the car sold or through MOT or such. I have seen similar things done to VW Polo dash panels. Whilst a code reader may assist you find faults you would still have no warning if a fault developed whilst driving.

Please forgive me as I'm not very electronically minded but, is there anyway that a voltmeter test could show if there was any power going to the engine management light, for instance, by connecting to the connections on the circuit board

scatz is spot on, believe me I do mileage correction for a living, you should have power to where the bulb sits, do a diagnostics check first, someone with a half decent scanner will do that, i only ever charge 30 for the job so a local garage will be around the same.

Make sure you have no serious probs first, that car has been tampered with for a reason find out why first, thats my opinion, 30 could save you a lot more.

Hope that helps mate.

Thank you all for your replies.
We've had the car for a week now and had chance to run through a tank of petrol. Doing a litres/ mileage calc. it works out to about 38 mpg. Looking at the specs it's about what it should be, so I hope there isn't any major problems with the engine.
I could check for voltage across the 'eng management' LED with a meter but that would entail removing the dash pods glass, pointers and face again!! (I've only just got the pointers on in the correct positions from last time)
I still don't really know if the 'eng management' is faulty?
I think I'll run with it for a while, my logic being that it can't be too bad if it's giving 38mpg and starts well hot or cold.
When I get time I'll run it to a local garage to have any 'codes' read bearing in mind that I have probably added a few myself playing with sensors etc.
Thank you all again for your help and I'll post when I get any info worth posting

Are you sure it's an LED?.All the Renault dashes that I've come across of this era use bulbs.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
