Engine management light

Hi all

First post, so here goes..

I have just bought a Renault Kangoo 1.4 year 2000.
I have since found that the air bag warning light (LED)on the dash has been butchered with a screw driver. Likely reason to cover up a fault ( ribbon thingy in steering wheel?).
I am now worried that other problems may be hidden.
At switch on I don't get any engine management MIL test.
Is this normal? I have unplugged a couple of sensors in the engine bay expecting to get a 'engine' warning light on the dash..but nothing shows. Again is this normal?
If the engine managment light has been disabled can I buy a cheap OBD code reader ( eBay ) to check for hidden faults and if so what type do I need? EOBD came in 2001 so it's too old for that.

Thanks in advance

Not certain what a MIL test is but on the Clio what I think is all the dash warning lights light up for a short time then go out, hope this helps.

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?

If you find a fix for your problem please let us know it will help others.

definetly sounds like someone has been fiddling with it. maybe took the bulbs out or atleast disconnected them in someway to hide all the evidence of a problem. you would probably be better to sort the lights behind the dashboard if you can then take it to a garage and get them to check for any fault codes?

was it private sale or from a dealer of some form?

I'd definately do as Stef advises and try and sort out the dash lights first and go from there. If your unsure which bulb does what, take the dash pod out and remove one bulb at a time.If you hold the unit up to a light and look through the back you'll see what it illuminates. The engine management one on your car looks like a glow plug light with a box around it,or it could look like a heart monitor, again with a box around it.

I would seriously advise against any of the cheap code readers on ebay ,they are all pretty much useless I'm afraid.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Hi all and thanks for the replies.

MIL stands for 'Multifunction Indicator Lights'
And it was bought private.

At switch on I get the 'ign' , ' oil ' and 'hand brake' lights on as you should.
The slow flash of the immobiliser changes to on for a second or two then off (correct).
The 'low petrol' warning lights briefly as a test.
The Fasten seat belt light comes on.
The Air Bag light does not test due to the srewdiver modification!
The engine management or 'Electronic incident' as Renault call it (as you said a glow plug and heart beat in a box) does not come on as a test (The handbook doesn't say it should) But warns if it comes on when driving consult dealer. With the engine running I have unplugged a few sensors (Lamda etc) to see if the light comes on, but it doesn't. Should it?
The ABS light also stays off ( the car does not have ABS ) so that ok.
The problem is they are not 'bulbs' but LEDs (light emmiting diodes) and the are directly soldered to the board, so cannot be changed or swapped around without stripping the dash pod totally to bits and getting out my soldering iron.
I have had the pod out and glass, pointers and face off, plus the back off. But would need to go even further if I replaced the LEDs, then it may not go together again

So what I really need to know is how can I tell if I have an engine fault without plugging it in to a reader? If the light on the dash is dead it could work out expensive to get the codes checked at a garage every time I think I may have a problem, hense the cheap eBay reader.

Either that or a new dash pod ( expensive I guess)

Any thoughts?

Thanks Andy
