Key info

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Recently bought a megane 1999 T 1.6 rt sport. only one key though!!! After lots of reading on the internet I'm now terrified of losing this key. Really need to get a spare. I really need to know; is it likely to be a radio signal key?
whaere am I best going to for a spare key?
would the central locking button trick work if I knew my code (which i dont)
what type of car is it - phase 1 or 2 ?

sorry if this list seems long - never owned a renault before - havn't got a clue.
thanks for your help

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I strongly suspect that your car will be a Megane 1 phase 2.You should have a front end like this with two small 'moustache' grilles in the bonnet.....

If you car has a 'beak' at the front of the bonnet then it's a Megane 1 phase 1.

The later Meganes should have an RF key with a chip in it to switch the immobilser off, earlier cars had the immobiliser built into the remote central locking(IR/infra red signal......I think I've got that round the right way).I strongly suspect that you do have a chip in the key type arrangement and the lock button trick won't work I'm afraid. If your remote central locking signal goes you will still be able to unlock the car by using the key barrels and you will also be able to start the car.Just check that the key does actually work in the barrels though, they tend to seize up as they never get used and the key just spins in the locks or doesn't turn at all.The central locking won't work from the barrel either, you'll need to use the lock button inside the car to open the other doors.

I think your only option to get a fully functioning key is to go to Renault, but it might be worth seeing if any Autolock specialists in your area can make and programme a key for you first.I'm not sure if they can provide a key that works both the immobiliser and the remote locking though.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
