Question Headlights Go Brighter then dim

Hi There guys,

With my job I do alot of milage, I notice last night in the dark that when my car idles when Im at a junction (when it doesnt cut out! refer to other thread) My lights are dimmer and get brighter with a little throttle, I have my radio on and my sat nav on while this is happening the only thing which is plugged in.

Any ideas why this happens or maybe its just normal? Maybe An upgrade in battery had mine for 3 years? maybe to a calcium battery or what ever they are called? or maybe its something else?

Thanks in advance Graham

My lights do the same and have done since I owned the car (1yr now) I cant see it causing any problems, mine does it when nothing else is turned on. I think it has something to do with the alternator. Im also a biker and the lights do that on most motorbikes due to it being a smaller and less powerfull alternator

It must be a battery or alternater problem, my car and my 1994 motorbike do not dim on tickover.

A problem well stated is a problem half solved !

It.s not as noticeable on some vehicles but nr all do it
to some extent unless the idle speed is a bit high,
it's likely to be normal if your car sometimes cuts out
it may be idling a bit slow and this will make it more

Who would design a vehicle that falls over when you stop?

If you find a fix for your problem please let us know it will help others.

Wouldn't do any harm to get the battery load tested and the output of the alternator checked in case it an early sign of failure
