My speedo is only working intermittently and after checking out this forum I understand that the sensor is probably at fault.I think i have located it but can anyone please tell me how to disconnect the wire plug to it and also to remove the sensor? Thanks

Do a search for 'speedo sensor' and it'll pull a load of stuff up, including pics - most of it relates to the Clio but it may well be applicable to the 'guna as well - you'll find instructions on how to do cleaning and changing if required, unless someone's fiddled with all the gen since I looked at it last night :d

General concensus seems to be that the sensor clips into place, but it can be a royal pain in the backside to gain access to (I can attest to this for the Clio, at least!) A replacement sensor will cost you £25-30+VAT by the looks.

I had intermittent speedo issues travelling up north yesterday. Given that it was also extremely damp and foggy for much of the journey, and the car was a bit reluctant to start yesterday morning, I suspect that some water might have gotten into the sensor and caused it to go open circuit - lovely dry day today and absolutely no problems on the way back. I'm also using my GPS as a 'backup' speedo.

[EDIT: Forgot to add - if the sealing is a bit suspect, a glob of vaseline or similar is a good short term fix]

Here's a little trick I saw posted on t'Internet somewhere (wish I could remember where, though!) - it works on the Mk2 Clio, and may work for other Renaults with digital/electronic speedos as well:

If you suspect that your speedo sensor may be faulty, do the following:

  • Press the trip reset button, and keep it pressed down.
  • Turn on the ignition - keep the trip reset button pressed for 4-5 seconds.
  • Your trip and total mileage will then show all 8s and the speedo, rev counter, fuel and temperature gauge will go into 'test mode' - you'll see the needles on these gauges moving up and down through their range (eg. 20, 40, 60mph, fuel empty, 1/4, 1/2 etc.)
  • To leave 'test mode' just press the trip reset again - displays etc. will return to normal.

If it's the speedo sensor that's at fault, then none of the above will happen - the downside is that it's not really a lot of use if you've got an intermittent fault (as I have - car is going in on the 8th for a new speedo sensor)

This may be common knowledge, of course, but was news to me :d

The article in question actually refers to the replacement of the sensor on a Laguna, but is equally applicable to the Clio in that a) the sensor is usually a clip-in job and b) is located behind the gearbox - on the Clio at least, it's a monumental pain in the backside to get at unless you can get the car up on a ramp and go at it from underneath.

I used this thread: http://www.renaultforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20071&highlight=speedometer+sensor as my starting point.

Putting "speedo sensor" or "speedometer sensor" in as the search term might widen your options a bit more. Something else that might be worth investigating is the possibility of a bad earth connection in the engine bay (at least according to a few of the articles I've read)

I changed a sensor on a Clio 2 the other day,and it was a pain the ar$e!.From memory there were two plastic clips that needed to be pushed in to be able to get the sensor out,I think you have to push a small screwdriver into two holes either side of it to get it out.

Yep - once I'd worked out which bit I was looking for, I just said 'bugger it' and booked the car into the garage :) Fortunately(!) it's due a service anyway ...

Still a bit of a shocker when the speedo went to sleep and the engine management light came on whilst I was doing 70-odd on the A1 on Christmas Day, though ...
