The Haynes manual doesn't say or show a picture but according to their schematic drawing they should be on the pipe that leads from the thermostat housing going to the heater matrix. As theromoplungers pull a hefty current they will have fairly heavy cabling

They look exactly the same as glow plugs and there are usually four of them in a square unit. They can be a nightmare to remove as they corrode into the housing usually meaning that if you need to replace them you need the unit they sit in too.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

Have you tried switching to side/fogs give the screen a good washing then switching back to lowbeams? I have noticed that the headlamp washers only fire up the one time. So if I hold the washer stalk the headlamp washers fire once but the screen wash stays on till I release the stalk..Dave

To go back to the original question, if your screenwasher level is low, because of the positioning of the pump in the washerbottle, which higher than the screenwasher pump, it will only pick up air, which might exlain no headlamp wash. It's probably to preserve some screenwash function over headlamp cleaning if the level is low.
