You got it, and yes it must I'm afraid. You will risk loosing radio/immobiliser codes tho.

If you've got a spare 12v battery about, you could do this

Thanks Pat. I have the radio codes although I don't ever remember being issued with immobiliser codes

Read the instructions for your charger.

Personally if it doesn't say and was the typical low-current type (just a few amps) I wouldn't disconnect my battery to charge it. If you think about it the charger is going to put out less voltage and current than your alternator does.

Just follow the same precautions as you would if you do a jump start to minimise sparking ie connect the charger positive terminal first to the battery then connect the charger negative somewhere away from the battery (like your engine block.)
