Normally you would'nt load up an existing supply because you would take your cable to the
of a relay.
This would only draw milliamps.
You are correct in what you say. To do it properly you would take a switched feed from somewhere to the relay
, then take a direct feed from the battery, through a fuse to the common pole of the relay. Then connect your load to the n/o contact of the relay.
In my experience though, unless you have the knowledge, it is all to easy for DIYers to find a convenient switched feed and connect their load directly to it.
