None taken, I did have a quick look but didn't find anything with an answer but I will pm the guy in question.

I didn't think it was the child lock as the doors don't open from either the inside or outside and my understanding is that the child locks only disable opening from the inside. I will check out the switch though and have a general look inside the drivers door for loose wires or moisture ingress etc.

BTW I just used your how to on repairing the climate control backlighting, worked a treat ! thanks.

That'll be 320 for a new panel sir ;-)

Anyhow point is -- and I'm sure your all getting this by now -- if you managed to solve the mystery ( now matter how you do it ) -- please let us know as a return favour..I'll pop the post over to the knowledge base for future reference when ( or if ) we find a solution..

Door panel removal sounds like a top idea ( you'll need a set of torx head attachements for renault interior trim and flat bladed screwie to aid ( popping the card away from the door ) don't be afraid to use a little muscle power..
