Boot Light Switch
Kip, from your photo it seems that the plunger (a small plastic piston) has snapped off your boot light switch.
As the boot is closed, the plunger makes contact with a small plate on the car body. This then operates the microswitch that switches the light off, as you close the boot, and switches it on as it opens.
It happened to me a few years ago. You need to get a replacement switch unit from Renault - shouldn't me more than a fiver.
From memory, I think it just clips in to the panel - you may need to remove the boot lid trim to get access.
