This is proving to be a very popular topic on the forums. In order to try and keep it tidy and therefore useful, we have decided to set up this sticky thread as a place to post your questions. We also have a resident expert on the subject (Badkeys) who is willing to answer your questions and help if he can :)

Vel Satis key card

Just bought an 03 Vel Satis initiale (top of the range) and was supplied with two key cards. Having looked in the owner's manual it shows two cards, one with three buttons and one with two buttons; both mine are two button cards.
My question is; should the car have a three button and a two button card or two, two button cards?

Hi Steve (Badkeys).

Got a Clio and I think its about time I got a spare key. It's a 2003 Dynamique.

The key I have is an RF, which works fine. The spare is also an RF, but I can't get it to work with the car.

I don't know if you're allowed to tell me how to reprogram the key, but can you tell me if I'm doing it wrong? I've tried this:

Turn the ignition off. Press and hold the central locking switch; it does
not matter which side. Keep holding until the doors are heard to double
lock. It is necessary to hold the central locking button down until the
light on the dash stops flashing and stays on fully. Then whilst holding it
down press the button on the remote. Finally release the central locking
button and press the fob to check the central locking operation.

I don't think this is the right method, it appears that it might be for a different model of Clio.

Any advise on this post:
My clio key fob failed so had to pull the spare out. I replaced the battery but it is still not working. The red led does not light. Do I have to re-sync it and if so how or is it dead?
sounds like a fuse issue , immo light must come on
It is the red led on the key fob itself that does not work. The spare fuctions ok with the car, but this key just stopped the other morning.

Try this method in the link below to see if the fob is actually working, even though the red light is coming on it might not be sending any transmisison to the sensor.

Hmmm, not too sure then. My next step after that was to get it re-coded which can be done by either and auto lock specialist or Renault themselves, no-one else really.

At least you know the fob is working, that is the most expensive part. iirc it costs about £50 to have it re-coded at Renault, not sure about auto lock specialists, you'd have to ring around and see.

Before you do that have a look around the sensor in the car. Take the cover off round the interior light and see if any water has got in through the radio aerial (a common problem area).

If it is dry and clean then all I can think of is the re-coding tbh mate, unless someone else has another idea.

Hi

I have a 2002 02 Laguna and have 3 keys for it. one where both buttons work, one that locks the car and the unlock doesn't work and one that just doesnt work, however, the LED lights up. I think the previous owner somehow broke the unlock button, so bought the new key, but didn't programme it, as the blade is still blank.

First of all, is the one button not working a common thing, and can it be sorted?

Secondly, where (which i can guess maybe Renault are best) would be the best place to have the new key programmed to the car and roughly how much am i looking at?

Thanks for the help

Does the key that doesn't work the central locking work to start the car? as i have just had to order a new key as both my current ones are dead but one still works the immobilizer. When i was ordering i asked the dealer why they have to order it from RenaultFrance and they then have to put it on their computer to code it? and was told that RenaultFrance code the key from the chassis number to operate the immobilizer and then the dealer has to remap the Ecu to operate the central locking. You may find that the dealer won't recode the key you have as you haven't purchased it from them although you could try swapping the blank blade with the other key that is faulty and just say it has stopped unlocking your car.
Hunt around the dealers though as prices vary, dealer in Gloucester wanted £138+VAT for a new one all coded and Cheltenham has charged £131.40 Inc VAT all in.
Hope this helps:d

Hi Steve,i have a scenic mk11,05 plate and i have 2 key cards, both 3 buttons, one of the cards will allow you to gain entry to the car but when put into slot to start we get a message "card not detected" it started to work on & off for a couple of months until it finally let us down in the middle of a car park.we are now using the spare card but are worried that this will go the same way! is this a Renault thing or can it be sorted by going through a perticular sequance of pushing various buttons at the same time!!
Thanks
Craig

sound like the chip has died , no consolation but i think renault even cover themselves now by saying in the handbook that you should replace the card every 2 years ,:mad:, what a crap system its proved to be

Hi,I posted a question about my key card only unlocking the doors (scenic 05, 1.5 dci)but did not get detected once in the card reader which you told me that the chip had probably given up the ghost and need to buy a new one.I see on E-bay that there are key cards for sale, if i purchased one of these would i be able to have it re programed for my car and could any auto electrition do this or is it a Renault thing.
Again thanks for your quick reply to the previous mails.
Kind Regards
Craig

you need to be very very careful, you canot reprogramme a second hand card , if it has been programmed it may look new and even have a blank blade fitted, will never work though . if you do source a new 1 renault cannot do it , you need to look at the locksmith finder i posted somewhere on this thread

card not detected....... sorted!!!!!

hope this helps somebody. i own an 05 grand scenic 1.6 petrol. had trouble with spare card which we used on the very odd occasion, (too lazy to find the main key!) worked fine then card not detected fault. locks and unlocks fine. forgot all about it to be honest but the car was in for a service at a local garage so mentioned it to them. quoted 150 or so for new card, need log book, passport etc to do it. lot of cash and hassle, so i thought what the hell id try and get it apart and have a look, nothing to lose. spent a bit of time getting apart using stanley knife (watch those fingers) making sure not go in far enough to damage any internals, bit of a sod and i did break the case, but i got it apart. bit more work with the stanley to cut away where the battery terminal are moulded to one piece of the card and the circuit board was free. on the board are the are the button etc and a larger round part which is the transmitter or whatever it is that the car detects. has 3 legs coming from it 2 soldered to the circuit the other just acts as a support. 1 of the joints was flapping in the breeze!! soldering iron with small tip little blob of solder, hey presto reconnected. reassembled slapped on a bit of tape...... the moment of truth........ bingo worked first time :d
did have tape all the way the card was little tigher in the slot but did work. have now glued the end you insert. it may not be pretty but who cares as long as it works!! now what can i blow the 150 on that i saved!!!

i expect its the same problem with other undetected cards as there wasnt a lot holding the joint together on mine, if anyone wants me to have a look a theirs give me a shout, cheers. andy

Calling Badkeys...

Spoke to my Renault dealer (storeman) today about getting a new keycard for my 52 reg Laguna.
He told me that he would need my log book to get the chassis number, then he would order a new card from France.
They would then code the card at the factory and it would be ready to use on the car (when I eventually get it).
He said there was no need for me to take the car to the dealership as the card would work straight away.
What I have read on this forum seems to contradict that last statement.

I have been offered a brand new card key, could BadKeys or another auto lock smith code this to the car?

if it is brand new yes an autolocksmith can programme it to your car , dont see how the dealer can pre programme it to work without the vehicle present , i think he is very much misinformed :d

laguna card not detected flashing led on dash

hi,

i have 2 cards for my 01 laguna II phase 1. the main one stopped working last night, it unlocks/locks the doors fine but when i put it in the slot to start the car the red led light on the dash flashes. my mate had to drive me home to get the spare key then come back and it starts and works fine with that.

Today i went hunting for cr1620 batteries from local shops for the card. found some new panasonic ones. Put the battery in and the main card still doesnt work.

The guy at the electrical shop suggessted try the working spare key without the battery. and that will start the car fine. So this ruled out alltogether this being a battery issue.

What can be done about this. The spare was brought from Renalut about 15 months ago and cost me £130+ for card and programming, i am having to use that now as the primary card is duff, but oddly unlocks and locks the doors fine.

Can me original card be reparied. Has anyone suffered similar symptons to this?

Regards,

Indi
