My first port of call would be to check for water ingress around the receiver in headlining above the rear view mirror.Renault very kindly put the aerial just above it and this leaks soaking the sensor.
If it has got damp then you have a 50/50 chance of drying it out and it working or not.Replacements aren't expensive from Renault but you'll need the code number off of the sticker on the unit.
You can also double check the signal from the key by pointing it at a digital camera some how too,I've never tried it myself as we have a tester that you just point the key at and it lights up if the signal is OK,but there are details on what to do with the camera and the key on the forum somewhere.
I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....
