I have finally had the problem sorted thanks to a local garage
It turned out to be a combination of things
Firstly there was a slight
leak in the pipe above where the temp guage sensor is which had contaminated the wiring and the sensor so the sensor got replaced, wiring got cleaned and the leak stopped hey presto the guage started working.
When the garage was checking over the guage stopped working again so they investigated further.
It turned out to be one of the wires going to the sensor had been resting on the engine and a hot water hose.
To look at the wire you wouldn't think any thing was wrong with it because the plastic coating of the wire wa untouched but the wire inside had burned/melted causing it to short.
£130 later I am a happy man with a fully working temp guage.
