Hi and welcome to the forums

Has any warning lights lot up on the dashboard at all ? Might be worth checking the tightness of the battery terminals under the bonnet. Sounds like it could be a loose connection ?

Has any work been done on the car lately to explain this ? It certainly sounds like it could be an electrical problem. Not sure on the "clapping" noise though, but its probably connected.

Oh, I also think you have a loose battery or a loose earth/ground cable.

Why is it the older I get .... the better I think I was ?

I DID mis-read your post, sorry,

agreed...the jumping sounds like either an earthing problem or poorly gapped/damaged spark plugs, would defo lean towards the earthing problem too though.

With poorly gapped spark plugs the car may well drive OK just tootling around, then just barely fire when you try to accelerate a bit more, the engine is fine one minute, then just goes GNNNNNNNN, then away it goes as if nothing's wrong. It's black magic how it sometimes does, sometimes doesn't.... beats me.
