98 Espace battery warning and STOP light

Hi All

Apologies if this topic has been covered already, but I've trawled the forums and can't find a thread that completely answers my particular problem...

I have an Espace 98 RT-E, bought in UK in December, dead battery replaced immediately. The car ran fine until today, when the battery warning light came on, followed by the STOP light. The battery seems fine, not too hot, there's no smell of sulpher or smoke, and the car still starts first time.

Now, my prime suspect was the electronic dash, which occasionally tells me I'm doing 0mph when I'm moving, but other threads seem to think it could be an overcharging alternator. My handbook says take it directly to a dealer, but...

...the thing is, I'm in Montenegro, miles away from the nearest Renault dealer and even further from a mechanic who can speak English! (my Serbo-Croat is decent, but not enough to talk cars).

Can anyone tell me how to check if it's just my dash playing up, or whether it's something else again? I'd appreciate any advice...

Thanks in advance

I suggest you check the voltage being put out by the alterator which should be between 13.5 and 14.8 volts. This can be done by using a multi-meter connected across the battery terminals with the engine running. With the engine stopped the reading should be around 12 volts assuming the battery is in good condition

Also check all the battery terminals are clean and sound including any engine earth straps

I take it you have checked the auxiliary belt hasn't broken or come off
