LOL safety first and all that.....
I kind of agree with both sides of this little debate -
True it needs certain circumstances to ignite the petrol, think about it though: like madnoel said, if you can smell it - it has already vapourised, all it takes then is a loose electrical connector or momentary short to earth of a wire in the engine bay and you have a nice little brazier where your engine used to be.
Given that she can smell it whilst driving then it will likely be fore of her, not aft,
suggesting it's originating in the engine bay.

I don't think the potentiometer is adjustable at all, it will likely only be 2 bolts to remove it but as far as I can tell from what I've been reading it needs to have its min/max values set by computer in a workshop, otherwise it may not operate the throttle plate properly in relation to the accelerator pedal position.
