Scenic Radio and display not working

I am having problems with the radio and display in my 2001 Y reg Scenic. A few weeks ago someone tried to steal the radio/cassette player (god knows why!) it was the original model for the car. It was half hanging out and I couldn't push it back in so I took the radio removal keys to take it out so I could try to push it back in again straight. I had a real struggle getting it out as the rough treatment had twisted the metal framework that holds the radio in. The radio did still work at this point though and so did the display. Once I finally got it out the radio died and so did the display (no radio display, clock or temp) I have tried a new radio (bought 2nd hand from ebay ) still nothing. I also replaced the fuse - nothing. I'm not sure if it is the display bulbs as it went off so suddenly. I'm assuming it is the car as opposed to the radio as it is a different radio. But when I took it to the garage (for an unrelated prob) they reckoned it was the radio!! Help! I don't know what to do now!
