Computer display not changing Clio2 Sport 1.4 W reg

Hi, I have trawled the forum for an answer to this so if I've missed it my apologies. (There was one similar post but no real resolution so I can only hope)

My (newly acquired) Year 2000 Clio 1.4 sport has the computer which displays mpg, range etc. (The specification says it has one)
After switching on the ignition the "ooooo oil" message appears for approx 30 sec it then changes to odometer, and I cannot get the display to change to any of the other measurement readouts, it is stuck on odometer and trip miles. Trip miles can be zeroed by pushing the button below the speedo.
I have done the dash reset thing (if that's what it is?) by holding the above button in for some seconds and then all the dials become possessed by a strange and mysterious force and move of their own free will! (I think I've been watching too many films!)

Repeated pressing on the button on the end of the rh stalk, both after driving for a while and without driving do nothing. The previous owner tells me it definitely worked many years ago but he wasn't interested in it so, to quote his words "I switched it off" He probably meant that he left it on mileage but I cant be sure as I don't know if there is a way to dis/enable it. I have tried all sorts of combinations of buttons to no avail.
What have I stupidly overlooked?
Many thanks to all in the forum.

(PS I just tried a later clio of about 2005 vintage and it can be changed through all the different readings after the ignition is switched on, driving it isn't even necessary)

edit to the message- When the dash test is performed do you have to leave it to get to an end itself or do you just turn the key off, which stops the test? I didn't wait for longer than about a minute and it was still cycling so I turned it off- I just wondered if that was relevant?- end edit

You can end it by switching off the ign or pressing
the mileage trip button again it will stay on unless canceled,
you can drive with it on and one of the figures it gives
is how much fuel is going in in milliliters.
I wounder if the button on the end of the stalk is not
making a contact due to not being used for so long?

Computer button mk2 clios and fuse question?

Thanks for the suggestion, I must admit that did cross my mind but I thought it unlikely and I have tried 'hitting' the button moderately hard but to no avail. If I saw it change just once that would confirm it was mechanical. Unfortunately I cant check the contacts without stripping off the column shroud as I don't yet have a wiring diagram.
I have a question though; on the car I looked at yesterday which was I think circa 2004/5 , there was a difference in the mechanical arrangement for that button. On mine the button and the part that turns to switch on the rear wiper is one integral piece, so when you press the button the whole thing moves, whereas on the later car the button only moves when pressed, the outer part for the wiper switch rotates separately.
I'm beginning to wonder if that's a clue and perhaps the car doesn't have the computer after all!
By the way if you leave the dash self test going it does eventually stop by itself, it just takes quite a time maybe 2 mins (or more?).

Also is there a fuse associated with that part of the system and if so is there any downside (regarding the computer re-starting or needing initialising) to removing it?

Computer button apologies and reliable spec?

I was told by the previous owner that it had a computer, however I believe he may be incorrect as the spec on Autotrader and Parkers does not mention it! Is there any other place I can look for a reliable spec?
In his defence he does have another Clio so perhaps he was confused.
That aside I will post a photo of the stalk as soon as I can (busy all weekend) and ask for owners with computers to compare if it's the same or not. (see my previous post re this)
My guess is that the cars with computer will all have the separate button and on the non computered cars it will be integral with the rear wiper switch.
Sorry for any confuzzulation doh!
Thanks for the replies.

If the very end of the stalk is a different color I
to the rest of the stalk I would think it as the computer, but
if you ring a Renault dealer with the reg number they can
check on there system.

Computer button

Thanks. In general I suspect its even easier than that, I think if the rear ww knob on the end of the stalk is one piece it does not have the computer, however if it appears to have a separate button on the end it will have. I've not been able to fully test the theory with enough cars yet. I will post pic to illustrate what I mean as soon as I have access to both types and it aint raining..ugh.

sorry

As I suspected if there is a computer there are 3 dots on the stalk end and I was misinformed, it didn't have a computer, it was his other car which did! Arghh ...but still it was an interesting exercise in learning about Clios. Thanks for the replies and apologies to have wasted anyone's time.
