Does the red light work on your key blip?
If it does,then you need to determine wether you have a signal being emitted by the key(most garages have a tester,test takes a few seconds).You can do this yourself using either a radio aerial or digital camera,but I can't remember how it's done!.

Was the new reciever brand new,and was it matched to the key??

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

well the keyfob i got with the car the light doesnt light up but the brand new fob i got does light up but i was trying to program it to the car my self with the instructions ive found on the net but doesnt work and this would cost a bomb if took it to main dealer or a garage to do i think

be ncie to know if the keyfob that come with the car does transmit a signal please remember :P hehe

the instructions i followed was this:

1. Turn Ignition OFF.
2. Press the central door locking button for more than 5 seconds. Note :
the door should lock then unlock.
3. When this happens, 10 seconds is allowed and the immobiliser warning
light illuminates.
4. Point the 1st key at the receiver and press the button twice, the
doors should lock and unlock. Repeat for other remotes as required.
5. Check the remote control unlocks and locks the doors.
