I know you may be reluctant to spend any more money on the car but it may be worth having a decent auto-spark have a looksee before condemning it.

There are many dodgy sellers out there and it just ain't in the motor trade either

At least turn it over on the starter with a spare spark plug(or one from the engine) coupled to an ht lead and earthed to the engine. You will then know whether it is ignition or fuel.

That wiring is pretty shocking!

I would definitely look at the immobiliser, I've had a shocking week with my new acquisition, went down the TDC route (that was bad anyway!) but it's turned out to be the immobiliser.

What are the dash lights doing when you try to turn it over? If you've got a steady blink on the "SERV" and ecu light (heartbeat in a box) it could be the immobiliser.

take a look at my thread here: Laggy Mk 1 Phase 1...should I cut and run?

and this one that turned on the lightbulb for me:
Megan Imobiliser/car won't start

Hope this helps mate, 700 is a lot to spend when it's all you have!!
