Question Laguna ll 2001 1.6 16v starting problems

Hi everyone i own a laguna ll 1.6 16v expression for almost two years now and have no problems up untill recently, apart from the usual key fob and tyre pressure sensor issues but judging by the forums these are pretty standard! About two months ago the car began to not start very well and woulod take a good ten pushes of the start button to spring to life, and would cut out evry now and again when comoing to a stop for a junction, but now the problem has escalated, the car wouldn't start at all and when i lifted the bonnet there was a constant beep coming from the air flow meter, when i removed the connector on the air flow meter the beep would stop and upon plugging the connector back in it the beep had gone and when i pushed the start button again the car would start but the revs would go up and down without me even touching the throttle, now the car will not start unless i take all the big fuses out and put them back in again, thus reseting the car i guess. I have checked all earthing and have made sure all contacts on fuses are good, sometimes it will start but only run on three cylinders, the tick over is also appauling and near to stalling most of the time, the issue seems to be electrical and intermitent but there are no lights on the dash giving me a clue to what the issue is related to! I dont know if they are related but the reversing light switch has gone and i am in the process of fitting a new one, and the exhaust is blowing a little from the manifold area. Sorry about the lenght of this thread but its such a strange issue its hard to explain! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

Thumbs up

How you getting on with the Lag Daniel? any progress? fraid i cant help with the majority of the electrical issues you seem to be having, but i can totally symphatize wtih the problems starting the car & it cutting out every now and again, mine started doing this also and was completely random, but of course everytime i took it anywhere for some advice it worked fine!! the advice i got was all related to the battery or potential earthing issues... but i tried loads and got nowhere, till i came across a thread on hear re the TDC sensor, and just giving it a quick clean. followed the instructions to locate it, cleaned some rust off it with some sandpaper and the lag is now sweet as a nut, starts every time without pause.. couldnt believe how quick of a fix it was & that all those mechanics ah spoke to didnt seem to going down the right route at all... so, if youre still struggling marra, search for TDC sensor, & clean it up, might not solve all the problems, but might well perform better and make any remaining problems a lot easier to identify and fix!

try here... Laguna 11 TDC Sensor Fix

Hi, funnily enough as soon as i posted this thread i found the T.D.C info by accident and followed the instructions like ya say on how to clean it, and wat do ya know! It worked!, still cuts out now and a again when cold but at least it starts everytime now!! Recently had to replace the temp sensor on it but that wasn't to bad! Got a new wing mirror cover from renault for it and cost me 61!! For another tenner i could have got a whole wing mirror on ebay !lol But its done now!! Got to do the cambelt on it soon, well overdue now as its done 73000 miles and is 8 years old, managed to get the cambelt kit from mill auto, our local parts place, got it for 57 with the old mans trade discount!! I will be getting our local garage to replace it though, he said he would only cahrge me 2.5 hours labour for doing it so not to bad i thought! I'll keep ya posted on what hurdles the lovely laguna puts infront of me! Should be fun!!!lol
