Hello and welcome to the forum.

If you change the standard fit radio for an aftermarket one the display won't work, and if you want to use the hand controls you have to buy a different wiring adapter(this is available for some stereos, but not sure about Alpine ones)

Also, the unit is back lit,and the bulbs have a tendency to blow after a while.Might be worth checking them too.

Hope this helps.

I'd rather push my Alfa than drive a BMW....

I'm not sure about the Clios, but when I swapped out the stereo in my 95 Laguna RXE, the temperature display still worked.

Did the car come with this Alpine stereo when you bought it? If so, maybe the display failed while the previous owner had the car, and swapping out the stereo for one with its own display seemed like the best solution at the time.

If you can get another display cheaply enough from the scrappy, then I'd be inclined to give that a shot. Otherwise, I'd just live with it. It's not worth spending a shedload of money just to know what the outside temperature is. Even if you do fix the display, chances are that the stereo still won't use it (the more basic interface boxes just do the remote, and I'd expect that's what you have fitted.)
