Stereo not working

Hi, I have a 1997 Espace but the stereo has not been working for some time! I have been quoted about 500 to fix this but was hoping there is an alternative? Can I not buy a diff type of stereo and use a converter? Any tips greatly appriciated, Sophie

Hi Sophie - firstly - in my opinion, anyone asking you for 500 quid to fix a stereo in a 1997 car is trying to rip you off.

You didn't say what's wrong with the stereo (?), but you should have several options:

- look on ebay for the same radio model, and swap it out. It should be cheap, but be sure to get one with radio security code if it has one. This would hopefully keep any steering stalk controls & remore displays working, if it has any (I don't know the '97 Espace).

- look for almost any aftermarket radio model, new or used, and have someone fit it (Halford fit for free if you buy new). Probably the cheapest option, although you may lose any stalk controls / external display.

There probably other options as well, but all of them should be FAR below 500 quid.

Hope that helps a bit,

Have you checked the radio is getting a proper voltage supply and earth. If the unit has died it may be possible to fit an after-market unit by fitting an ISO adaptor.
See the link below for possibilities. Many ICE suppliers can supply suitable adaptors

IIRC on the OP's model of Espace the stereo head unit is in the floor under the drivers seat, which is probably why the cost is so high (but still too much).

So fitting an aftermarket radio would mean extending the wires up into the dash area no doubt.... It no doubt possible though.

500 seems way too much
if the stereo is a standard din size, you will be able to get an aftermarket one from around 40 and about 10 for fitting.

find a car audio specialist in the yellow pages etc and give them a call and get a quote from them, or you can try halfords. Interested in trackdays??
