Hi Mike

Sorry - only just seen your 1st post. Renault dealer garages are still doing the £100 "goodwill gesture" payment. However, mine didn't offer that when I first rang up - it was only after I told them I knew it was a known fault that they backtracked and said about the £100 !!

Glad you're getting yours sorted !

Hi
Just recently bought a 54 Plate Renault Grand Scenic and only after using it for 2 months the Dashboard has gone. After searching on the forum i realised that it is a common fault and was featured in bbc watch dog program as well. It all started the same clock resetted and then dash went totally blank.
Went to local dealer they are saying now they need to further diagnose the problem and trying to charge me £120 plus vat per hour and said it would take them at least 2 hours to diagnose the problem so total cost just to diagnose the problem is £240 plus vat. I don't know what to do.
That is there new tactic to charge customers more money. If they have agreed that it is a renowned problem they should not charge so much for just diagnostics.
Any help or comments appreciated.

Hi There, yeah, theres a lot of problems with this. if you read some of the threads to this you'll get all the info you need. To summerise what i added last year when my wife's went ( 2004 scenic too ), being irish we seem to have absolutely no satisfaction with Renault in Ireland, total shower of unhelpful B*******! I believe if you threaten with legal action you may get sorted, especially in the UK.
We just ended up taking it out, the dash that is, and sending it up to northern Ireland to be fixed. Cost 150stg. Well worth it. Its still going fine and they give a 2 year warranty. A NEW dash from Renault only comes with a 1 year warranty, JOKE.
Cant remember the name of the place but i'm sure if you google 'Renault dash repair northern ireland', you'll get the address. I think the guys name is Iain, nice crowd too. I was having trouble getting mine out and i rang him and he went through it step by step on the mobile while i was in the car. We got it back in about 3 days.
Anyway, good luck.

Thank you guys for your responses.

Spoken with RCS they have spoken with the branch now and they will bear the cost of initial diagnostics for locating the fault. They said they will take at least 2 hours just to diagnose the fault let alone to do something to fix it and its already 3 days they have my car. I am sure they will not do any thing to diagnose as it is definetely the dash board fault and they just want money and now backing out of their promise they made after that BBC program. Good bye renault my first and last ever renault.

Hi There,

Well i would have questioned the 2 hours . That an outright insult because its fairly obvious what the fault is . I have heard of places charging 1 hour ok for 'diagnosing the problem' . Believe it or not, all they do is plug in a computer with a special lead and within minutes they know what the problem is.
I wouldn't have given them 2 hours. Ask them what the warranty is ? Ask them if it goes again what the policy will be.
Have to say, hate people being taken to the cleaners like that by these people who know you don't have a leg to stand on if you know nothing about cars.
Anyway, i hope it works out for you. You shouldn't be paying more than 150stg for the whole thing, including parts !!! Its an inherent fault in their design . The part overheats and fails, over a short time in some cases.

Cheers

Hi guys just an update.
Received a call from the local dealer (Renault London East) saying after spending more than 2 hour on the diagnostics they are still not able to find the fault they need more another 2.5 hours authorisation to just diagnose the fault. And are currently charging £120 per hour for diagnostics.

This is complete nonsense if you think about it 4.5 hours diagnostics of a known fault i.e dashboard failure costing around £540 on a car thats worth £3000.
Guy please recommend me who to make a complaint to and how to start legal action against the company. Thank you.

Not sure here, it all sounds a bit strange if you ask me. It could be its something else ok but to be charging that kind of money and to be giving you that ridiculous explanation is crazy.
I would ask to talk to the manager , i wouldn't hand over any money. Not sure who you'd complain too in London as i'm in Dublin but i would pay a little visit to your solicitor ok . Usually a letter from a solicitor will make them sit up and pay attention.
In the meantime I'd get a second opinion from another garage. Say nothing about the first garage and see what they think the fault is!!
Good luck with all that.

Cheers

I'm adding my name to the list of disgruntled Scenic owners. The clock on my dash went haywire and then (about a week later) the whole instrument panel disappeared while I was driving. Thanks to trawling the internet, I found that it was a known fault. I have my car booked in for Wednesday. My main moan is that I shouldn't be charged at all for this fault - the cars should have been recalled and fixed free of charge. My other concern is how long the garage will have my car - and the fact that it is unlikely that I'll be given a courtesy car.
oh, and I'm certainly not looking forward to trying to sell it on with my 'verified mileage' certificate.

Another failure! Potential for all 150,000 odd customers to post here.

My problems started with the STOP light and battery symbol coming on whilst driving the car, this went out once next stopped and never came on again checked the manual which suggest over or undercharge. The next step was 2 weeks later randomly unlocking itself (Great Security), Nothing a start and stop of the engine didn't fix. 3 days later I had a knock from my neighbour saying my indicators were flashing. This time I tried the engine to find nothing on the dash and the car not starting. Fun was then had trying to manually lock the doors on a car that then unlocks itself. Fuse to be found! finally in the pitch black found central locking fuse removed and managed to lock the doors. Originally I thought prehaps the alternator had failed, low power unlocked the car or something. (Forgive me i'm a Building Services Engineer) The next day this was taken to Renault, and suprise a new dash was required. 56 plate with 32k miles.

Car back working ok, or so I thought!

3 weeks later, my key stops working. Originally I think nothing of it probably battery. 1 week after that my wifes key stops working 2 new batteries and no luck. Another visit to Renault and apparently we need 2 new keys. After explaining the fault we had with the central locking and dash 3 weeks prior, I asked the renault man if the central locking was linked to the dash, and whether these were connected, they advised me they weren't! £160 and 5-10 days delivery:devil: the wife was not happy and phoned Renault UK. After some long negotiation Renault UK agreed to pay 50% of the cost of 1 key and i'm going to send our spare to keyrepair.co.uk for £25 - £0 if not repaired. Must be worth a try.

My key is on order, if this does not rectify the fault Renault are:loser:.

Also when the engine is off the central locking makes a noise as if it is trying to lock but doesn't and it does this all of the time until it is locked manually or the engine is started.

Always make sure when you buy a car, it has a metal key and locks on the doors!

Seems different main dealers have different ideas.
My dash went awol this week (all the usual problems, blanking out, different parts flashing ect.)
I checked the fuse to the main panel (20amp in the passenger glove box fuse board) that was OK.
Removed the covers on the dash and checked the two plugs into the dash, those to OK.
Checked for a good earth from the dash to the chassis, that to OK.
Removed the battery for an hour (to let any capacitors in the system discharge), put the battery back and the damned thing all worked OK..... for about an hour.
So, e-mailed my local main dealer (Crossroads Garage in Kidlington) This was Sunday evening.
At 8-30 Monday morning the service manger phoned me.
I had explained the symptoms in the e-mail and he said it sounds like the known fault but it would need to be checked.
We arranged a time for that on the Wednesday.
I arrived, they took the car, gave me coffee while I waited.
The service rep came back, said yes, a faulty instrument panel, and yes, they will replace it for £100-00 inc VAT.
One and a half hour later I was back on the road with a new panel.
So, top marks to the team at Crossroads in Kidlington.

Footnote: they also did the brake recall last year while I waited, so perhaps it is just a case of asking if you can get it done while you wait.

Well, i'd go to Renault first and see if they will get it fixed for you . The panels are usually around the 250stg but this is a well know fault , inherent in the design. Keep at them and try to get it done for 150stg inc labor. Labor is only 10 minutes to install, ok to test it may be a bit longer but i took my own out and put the repaired one back in. Don't take any nonsense from them.
If they refuse to do it for that then there is a place in england and in northern ireland that will take the old panels and repair them and give a warranty of 2 years!! All for about 130stg plus postage. The address of the place in northern ireland is on this thread somewhere. If you cant find it then goggle it, 'Renault faulty panel repair'. I cant remember the name of the place , its well over a year since i had mine repaired.
Hope this helps.

Hi,

I bought a Scenic 2 (2005 plate) about 3 weeks ago. Apart from an annoying rattling in the cabin (front doors, I might have to take the trim apart!) I thought I had bought a lovely car.

2 days ago the dashboard started to blank for a second then come back on with a flashing 00:00 on the clock. I'd reset the clock then a few minutes later it would do the same again!

This morning on the way to Asda, it went blank and stayed blank. I'm now using my phone to see the cars speed and £60 worth of fuel was put straight in the tank...

I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow to see what they say.

Probably in the same boat as many other people, £120 is not a bad deal I suppose to replace the dash display but if it's a known fault then doesn't that leave a very bad taste in you mouth?

Don't know if this can be taken further or not???

Cheers

Hi all,
We take any issue where customers have problems very seriously. To your specific point, it is not our policy to "point the finger" at the original suppliers of vehicle components. There are a number of reasons for this, one being that in some cases we use multiple suppliers for the same part - to ensure continuity of supply.

Here is our full statement on the issue:
Renault aims to provide the best possible service to its customers and is concerned that some owners have experienced problems with the Scenic II instrument panel losing the display. This model was launched in 2003 and, since then, 159,000 have been sold in the UK.

We have investigated these cases of the instrument panel losing the display and found that they chiefly relate to 2004 and 2005 Scenic II models. These vehicles are now outside the standard manufacturer three-year warranty but we will help customers to have a new replacement instrument panel fitted to their vehicle, in the event of a failure, within the Renault UK Dealer network for £100.

We also invite any customer who has already paid more than £100 for this repair in the Renault UK Dealer network to contact Renault Customer Services to discuss a refund of the difference.

Any customer concerned about his or her Renault Scenic II should contact Renault’s Customer Services team directly on 08000 72 33 72, or by email at customer.services@renault.co.uk.

Kind regards
David

Hi
My dash went like your so as I bought it from new I rang Renault and tried to get it replaced for free as it is an inherent fault.
I spoke to an extremely helpful lady but wouldn't budge from me having to pay £100 this includes vat, she even organised the garage to ring me to book it in, they did and even collected it from my home.
The mechanic who brought it back said the true cost is over £400 so I suppose it was the best deal I could do.
So now I have a car the says it has only done 20 miles LOL.

In reply to Dave (Renault UK)!

I suppose the situation could be worse but the fact remains that many, many people have been affected by what is a safety critical fault.

In 24 hours I've found 3 forums (including this one) with the same problem and 9+ pages of complaints about the scenic 2 dash! Thats not even considering the 2009 watchdog program.

Renault must be able to isolate the fault and identify the supplier/manufacturer involved, I don't think its a case of pointing the finger, more like ensuring a quality product is delivered to the customer!

£120 for some is a lot of money, we are paying for someone elses mistakes.

Hi Chad, yes it does leave a bad taste in your mouth ok. In hindsight I guess with any car, especially a Renault, the history of it should have been checked, but then i guess one cant check everything. Sales are made on 'good faith' and a certain amount of luck i guess. We got rid of our Scenic last month. It was beginning to die! The back windows i had fixed on 2 occasions and then went again. I just held the window up with a stick inside the door frame !!! Said nothing when selling it !
The dash you should try to bargin with Renault and try to get them to do it. If you get nowhere there then try the place up in northern Ireland. Our dash was going for over a year after they fixed it, though they did guarantee it for 2 !
Watch out for the old Keys too. Make sure your spare is working. They have a nasty habit of going too, and its not the battery. Its a part in the circuit that just seems to fail and then the dash receiver just fails to see it. Again i had to send this to keyrepair.co.uk .
Hope all this helps,

Cheers

my 2004 Scenic dash was flashng on and off and making stupid bleeping noises, the car had 50,000 miles on the clock, but after this it is now reading 63,000 odd miles-how did this happen?,and can I get it back to it's original mileage, also now can't get the radio code to accept, all it does is the final digit keeps flashing.

#87 ·
Hi There, sorry to hear that. I know how frustrating it is. Yes, it would be normal for this to happen, if NORMAL is the right terminology..!!!
Anything can happen really. Our mileage indicator switched back to miles instead of kilometers while our one went , some nearly 2 years ago. We got rid of the car a few months ago, got ford c-max. Would recommend!
Anyway, to get back to the problem, the guys who fixed this for me up the north were able to re-jig the whole miles/kilometers thing with the s/w they have. You have to be honest though about how many were on the clock when it went. They have a fairly good idea of the average so if you try to pull a fast one they'll just switch to the average and give it back to you with that figure. That is if you get it repaired up there or where ever.
Anyway, hope this helps, my radio was ok though by the way.
I'm sure they could help you there too.
Good luck and if I were you I'd get rid of it before any more things go on it !!!

Cheers

Hi Alvin
Looks like your dashboard is failing like mine, If your out of warranty there is only one option ,I rang Renault direct and tried to get them to replace for free but they stuck to the their guns but they did organise it to be replace by the local renault garage It cost me exactly £100 (Vat was included) so not such a bad deal really the car is 6 years old. The real cost of having it done is going on for £500.
and the mileage goes back to Zero LOL.
