Laguna II immobilised

Is there any way of fixing an immobiliser problem other than going to a Renault Dealer?

My keys lock and unlock the doors OK, but when inserted, I get the red indicator permanently lit, which I believes means immobiliser failure.

The permanant red immobiliser light can mean a few things..

1: Defective keys.. and/or need re synchronised.. Un common

2: A defective Card reader.. Un common

3: The Coded steering column Lock has failed. This is a common & costly problem on Laguna II..
Unfortunately the lock must be smashed off the column, a new one fitted and reprogrammed. This is dealer only im afraid..
You probably don't want to watch this procedure being carried out tho as it looks very destructive, requiring a large bar and 7.5lb lump hammer!

My advice is to have the immobiliser fault codes read first to confirm the problem.. and get back to us..

i had this problem and had to have aa out to me. He disconected the battery leads and put it on charge for 10 mins with all doors closed and locked and bonet pin closed (as to not set off alarm). It has to be for 10 mins (according to aa man) he then reconected battery and it has worked fine since.

Thanks for the comments so far.
The guy from the local garage plugged in the computer tester, but it simply said that the car computer was switched off, requested that the ignition be turned on, and that there was no card in the slot (though there was).

It is the same with both cards.

They're going to look at it further after the holiday. They did notice evidence of moisture under the dashboard - not surprising since the car has let water in for over a year now.

Hey Geoff, the Laguna 2 was bad for letting water past the windscreen at the o/s/f bottom corner, problem is that the water runs straight into the uch , which is plugged onto the back of the fusebox, and knackers it, it can also cause damage to the steering lock computer, both items are coded into the immobiliser system so im afraid it might be an expensive visit to mr Renault, as WebCode says, the steering lock will have to be broken off if its knacked because if it cant be unlocked then the bolt holding it in place cant be removed, its not always the case that both are damaged but it does happen, at least when you go to the dealer next week you will be prepared.

Good luck
