The early Lag auto boxes were quite troublesome
They will revert to safe mode - 3rd gear only - if anything starts to go wrong.
They had problems with the front drive clutch drum splitting - only real option was to replace box - and the g/box multi function switches were also known to act up. This is located on top of the box and is a relatively easy change.
I've heard of a few occasions where an old battery or faulty alternator causes problems. Apparently the gearbox electronics will detect a low voltage and drop into safe mode. It might be worth getting the charging system and battery checked over first.
