When the tank is nearly empty (5litres or less), the miles remaining in the tank will display "---" and the petrol light should come on, this is perfectly normal due to the fact that it can never predict to the last mile whats left in your tank, as for the reading going up and down, this is because it is constantly working out between fuel left in tank/fuel being used to give miles left in tank, so in theory if you had half a tank full and were driving around town then the fuel left would be e.g 200miles but you were only doing 30mpg, then if you were driving on a motorway and were doing 45mpg then the miles left would be 300!(starting to confuse myself now!), this is why the reading can change.
*A tip for people who have a trip computer-Try to reset it everytime you fill up, it will give a much more accurate reading than leaving it to just keep counting*
Hope this helps..
