This is not a fault and it is not unique to Renault. Most manufacturers trip computers work in this way.
In our Pug 206 as soon as the low fuel light came on the display went to dashes.
When you are running low on fuel this gives you a warning of when to fill up. It is also an estimate of remaining miles depending on the current driving style/conditions. Cruising along at 56mph will give more miles remining than when in traffic. Also when you are getting that low on fuel it reverts to dashes which basically means you are in danger of running out of fuel, fill up as soon as possible.
