Very valid point Horatio, Especially regarding vans, etc. I know of a situation where a Ford Escort car was presented for MOT without the driver's mirror (it fell off the screen) and it was rejected on the grounds that the vehicle did not meet the vehicle standard as when approved by the Dept of Transport, or relevant EU guidleines, etc. It appears you cannot reduce the safety aspects of an approved vehicle. I appreciate the standards in Northern Ireland are more onerous than in the UK mainland but as a matter of interest has anyone had a car fail its MOT because the rear view was obscured or the mirror was missing.
