Strange TMC behaviour on new DVD sat-nav

My Father recently traded in his Vel Satis for a brand new laguna initiale. The Laguna has the new(ish) dvd based bluetooth navcom system and it all seems very impressive - a huge improvement over the unit in the Vel Satis anyway.

The only problem is the TMC info. It lights up green to show that it is receiving and switched on but frequently when asking for traffic info, it just states "No info of this kind available" immediately. Other times I get three items show up. Even setting a route guidance from Inverness to London and looking at traffic on route shows "No info...". Now, the old system on the Vel Satis would show 20 nearby traffic info pieces and many on a long route.

Anyway, after all that, I'm wondering whether the system is faulty or it just works in a very different way and waits till you are much closer to an incident before displaying it.

Has anyone else experienced both these systems?
