The remote range on our 02 Clio has been very poor from new. The only thing I've known with worse range was the Moss car alarm that I fitted to my MkIII Escort in 1989. It usually won't activate from inside the house, with the car parked mere feet away (albeit with a brick wall inbetween.) In the same situation, both this and the last Laguna would respond to each and every click of the button. In fact, I recently managed to remotely activate the Laguna's headlights from the sixth floor of a hotel with the car in the car park opposite.
The actual range is hard to determine. Each press takes a surge of energy out of the battery, which then takes time to recover. So if you've had a few failed attempts to 'zap' the car (because you were too far away) you may well have to get much closer than usual to get it to unlock.
Edit: Just to add, our Clio key opens as follows:
Hold the key button-side down and with the blade facing away from you.
With two fingers, hold the underside half in place, while pushing the closest edge of the topmost part forwards with both thumbs.
With a reasonable amount of force, the two sides will slide apart. Once they've moved about 5mm, they will separate.
This is a lot easier if you remove the key from your keyring first.
