Quick Google search turned up this:

Note 'illegal', i.e. it's breaking the law, not just ignoring a bit of highway code.

For this reason I don't fancy your chances trying to make an issue out of it. Try to take it further, and so could the magistrate if he's in a bad mood that day.

PS: (edit) - you should also inform your insurer, if you don't and you're involved in an incident, and then your insurer finds out that you've been given 3 points and a fine that they didn't know about, you can expect your insurance to be 'void'.

Also, next year's premium is likely to go up by approx. 30 - 50 per point.

Basically, you've dropped yourself in the do-do's. Limit the damage by accepting gracefully.
