ABS warning is most likely due to poor battery charge, as ABS gizmos use battery power to function. Warning doubtless tripped by low Voltage.

I agree it all suggests alternator fault by the sound of it. Had the same myself (grinding to a halt, no battery power).

Check all battery cables and alternator cables, also the braided earth straps to bodywork. It's even been known for one these to corrode right through and break in half.
