It's not just the temperature difference it is the rate of change in the temperatures that creates fissures in the metal which can then lead to metal fatigue. Rapid changes in temp can have devastating effects unless the metals and design if the components are manufactured to match. That's one of the reasons why aircraft engines are so expensive.

Most brake drums are made from cast iron which in itself has a crystalline structure and that in ityself means it is susceptible to cracking.

I haven't seen the BMW headstock but I would expect it to made from a good quality steel. And if that is the case then it wouldn't be a fair comparison.
if it was that bad just by going through water would cause damage to a brake drum
the system in the video has been used for years not saying its the correct way but its worked for many years with no ill affect
brake drum cast must be of a good quality seeing as it goes through different temperatures all the time
