It was probably just due to the cold weather - if the wipers were on auto when you first turned ignition on and sensor was covered/partly covered in frost it would have detected a" fault". As it only checks at start up it would have still thought the fault was their.
By switching engine off and back on again it reset - therefore all was well.
It may be worth keeping an eye on this tho for a while in case it develops into a more permanant fault. In the mean time put it down to the frost.
