It known as Rheostat (a variable resistor) - but I doubt that is what they are referring to - I think they are talking about the ballast resistor which allows stepped curent to be provided to the heater motor - thus varying the speed. Most cars have them fitted nowadays and is a common problem and not just on Renaults. Apart from going to a renault dealer why not try a good auto-electrician and he/she may be able to give advice. In all honesty it is very difficult to trace resistor faults without a decent multi-meter (any electronics bod will tell you). Good luck in your quest
