I Know how you feel and don't blame you for not wanting to fork out 300 quid and it still ain't fixed. If you are prepared to have a go yourelf why not invest 20 in a Haynes manual and see how far you can get on your own. Afterall as it stands at present your car is worth very little - many of us in here have been in the same situation and that's how many of us started. Alternatively you could get a mechanic to have a look and he could tell within a few minutes. If it's valves it may be cheaper to fit a second-hand cylinder head.
