Depending on the set up you can slacken the handbrake cable right off and then-

If there is a stop position on the brake shoe handbrake lever, push the lever so the stop pin goes behind the shoe.

This allows the shoes to retract closer together.
Once the drum is fitted and the handbrake lever in the car is pulled and released, the lever arm will return to it's proper position against the stop.

This allows brake drum removal in cases where there is a lip on the inside of the drum without destroying the shoes.
The idea is to push the lever using a screwdriver through one of the wheel bolt holes on the drum.

This might also aid installation but not sure that it should be necessary in your case.
