After running the car for at least 30 minutes a clunking/creaking noise develops, mostly over bumps, but also very slight aberrations in road surface. When the car is very warm the noise is very very noticeable.
Many 'experts' could see nothing wrong with the underside (car taken to three garages) - they could see no play in any joints or bushings. One changed the engine mounts at a cost of £390. They refused to admit any wrongdoing after I told them they had misdiagnosed the issue and charged me for irrelevant work.
Finally a Dartford Kent garage pinpointed it to worn ball joints in the inner tie rods
(not the tie rod end).
Diagnosis (£60) + parts (£100 - Renault robbery - get aftermarket parts off
for £20) + labour (£60 an hour at this place) + VAT = £297 total.
If u can be bothered to shop around you can shave off at least £100, but these guys were the first to find the fault and everything could be turned around very quickly, plus they smiled and seemed like they meant it - I'm happy to even pay for that it's in such short supply in this day and age.
But be careful:
you okay the repair whether the garage will order and fit genuine Renault parts or whether they are happy to fit parts you order and give to them. As standard this garage fits genuine Renault parts - it's there on the website, but I was not wise to HOW MUCH MORE THESE PARTS WOULD COST. These Renault parts (simple tie rods) cost £49.50 - EACH!! I was a fool and did not ask to get them to fit non-OEM parts ordered from
or similar by myself. Average non-Renault price is £12 each! Another steep hill on the learning curve, but at least it's not a Mercedes I'm dealing with...
