It worked without disconnecting - thanks all for your considered opinions.
To anybody Googling this: my local Renault garage quoted £260 to change the wing mirror. I bought a reclaimed one on
for £20 and a Haynes manual for £10. It was really not difficult to change. The only downside is that I bought an electric mirror from a slightly older model and it doesn't have the motor to retract the mirror from the controls - but never mind, well worth it to save £200!
