I'm not sure if this can be as serious a problem on cars as it is motorbikes, but did you remember to dis-connect the negative lead on the battery first....and re-connect it last?
On quite a few bikes this can immediately kill ( fry ) your ignition circuits.
The fact your engine turns but does not catch are the classic signs....
Hopefully this isn't relevant to the car and even if it is, I should imagine it is fairly easy to get a used ignition transistor cheaply.
