Is this perchance the handsfree system?

Mine's done this off and on from new. I'd say mine does it at least once a week, and as you say, a bit of jiggling about usually gets it to change its mind.

Occasionally (I'd say around once a month) it's so adamant that the card isn't there that I need to put it in the slot to get the car to start. Changing the battery doesn't seem to make much difference, and I've gone through 10 batteries in less than two years following that line of logic.

I suspect it's just a 'design feature.' That's the polite way of saying 'Dodgy French electronics.'
