Renault 21 TXI ABS Fault

My dad has owned a 1990 Renault 21 TXI from new and it is immaculate only covering 25,000 miles. It has ABS (one of the first Renault cars having this I think) but the warning light is now staying on. A local mechanic has spent a lot of time on it but the diagnosis is unclear. There is one wheel sensor that reads different from the rest when stationary but all are the same when moving. He is going to try a replacement sensor for that wheel but it is an expensive trial at 150.
Anyone with any othere ideas? The ABS unit itself looks very expensive to replace if one can even be tracked down. According to How Many Left there are only 2 currently registered in UK with 9 on Sorn so getting bits is going to be difficult I think.
